Garage Door Openers
Back To Our ServicesIt is an interesting fact that the garage door is the largest moving system in most homes. It is fully automated thanks to the opener system. These systems consist of both electronic and hardware components.
Motor
The door operator has either an AC or DC motor. The former offers great durability and reliable performance while the latter stands out with smoother, quieter and more energy-efficient operation. The horsepower of the motor should correspond to the weight of the door. The motor is set inside a case and connected to a circuit board responsible for controlling its operation. It is connected to a set of gears so as to enable the running of the chain or belt inside the rail.
Safety Sensors
These are two small devices set on the sides of the door about six inches off the floor. One of them produces an infrared beam and the other one captures it. When this beam is blocked by an object during the closing of the door, a signal is sent to the opener and the reversal mechanism is engaged for preventing collision. The sensors are included in the package of all garage door openers sold at present. They must be installed together with the rest of the system.
Rail
This is the biggest hardware component in the opener system. It matches the height of the door and extends from the motor unit to the wall above it. It houses the drive chain, belt or screw drive and has the trolley running along its length. The rail is quite strong and durable so damage is rare. It can get bend upwards slightly if the travel limit is set incorrectly and the door goes too far down. Usually, straightening will resolve the problem along with readjusting the limit.
Opener Repair
If the door refuses to close with the remote, the issue is typically with the safety sensors. If cleaning and alignment don't help, the components have to be replaced. When the motor fails, the opener will not run with any of the controls. In this situation, the component should be changed without delay. This type of issue is very rare, however. More often, the moving gear which connects the motor to the drive will break. In this case, you will hear grinding sounds and the door will be stuck in place. The repair involves replacing the broken component with a new one.
